Limousin Cattle Breeding

In April 2013, KMR Livestock imported fully pedigreed Limousin open and pregnant heifers from France. Our herd now includes over 100 suckler cows and their offspring. We are pleased to offer high-genetic Limousin heifers and bulls of French origin from our own herd to the local market and international buyers.

World-Famous French Beef Cattle Breed: The Limousin

Limousin cattle are a highly muscled beef breed originating from the Limousin and Marche regions of France, known as “Limousine” in French. Significant exports began in the 1960s, and today Limousin cattle are found in over 70 countries worldwide. Traditionally horned, Limousins display a distinctive color range from light wheat to darker golden-red. In recent years, international breeders have also developed polled (hornless) and black Limousins.

DNA analysis suggests that Limousins likely evolved from an introduced subspecies of aurochs domesticated in the Near East. Historically used as draft animals, their potential as high-quality meat producers became evident about 200 years ago. In 1886, France established the first Limousin herd book to preserve and enhance the breed’s purity, documenting only animals that met strict breed standards.

Limousins are popular worldwide for their low birth weights (ensuring ease of calving), high dressing percentage (carcass-to-live weight ratio), and yield (meat-to-carcass ratio), as well as their excellent feed conversion efficiency and lean, tender meat. A major multi-breed study revealed that Limousins convert feed to saleable meat faster and more efficiently than many British and continental European breeds, producing less by-product and waste.

Limousins are particularly favored for crossbreeding with breeds such as Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn, where they contribute hybrid vigor and enhance yield and feed efficiency. This crossbreeding balances the higher fat and marbling typical of British breeds with Limousin’s leaner meat and efficiency.

We would be delighted to support your Limousin herd needs with our pedigreed selection of bulls and heifers.
